LG Energy Solution Wroclaw to build one of Europe's largest electricity storage facilities

We are preparing to start construction of the largest energy storage project in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. The first large-scale battery energy storage facility in PGE with a capacity of approx. 981 MWh will be built in Żarnowiec, thus ushering in a new era of energy storage in our Group.

Dariusz Marzec, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

Dariusz Marzec adds: “It will ensure better energy balancing in the power grid by feeding power into the system during periods of increased demand and insufficient RES production, and drawing it at times of overproduction from renewable sources, thus allowing for their more efficient use.

“In practice, this means that in just two years' time, during the evening increase in electricity demand in Poland, we will be able to feed clean energy into the grid for up to 250,000 households,” explains the CEO of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

When we started producing batteries for electric cars in the Polish factory in Biskupice Podgórne, we believed from the very beginning that it would become a battery production center for the whole world. After these 8 years, we know that our investment played a key role and resulted not only in the introduction of state-of-the-art technology to Poland, but also made Poland a European leader in this industry. Today, we are taking the next step towards a new strategy and new projects - preparing the infrastructure for Polish and European energy storage systems.

Jangha Lee, CEO of LG Energy Solution Wroclaw.

Jangha Lee adds that there is a modern technology park in Biskupice Podgórne near Wroclaw, covering an area of over 100 hectares and employing several thousand people. “We will do our utmost to ensure that our factory contributes to both Europe's energy transition and the creation of new jobs in Poland and the development of local communities,” assures Jangha Lee.

LG Energy Solution Wroclaw, a gigantic energy storage facility. Key data

According to the contract, the nominal capacity of the storage facility will be approx. 981 MWh, with an achievable power of 262.2 MW in the discharge direction and 269.4 MW in the charge direction.

The battery energy storage system in Żarnowiec will be located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, near Poland's largest pumped storage power plant, Żarnowiec, which belongs to PGE Energia Odnawialna, which will be responsible for supervising the implementation of this project.

The project has received the first promise of a license for electricity storage in Poland and has a connection agreement to the national power grid. Previously, in December last year, it obtained a 17-year contract in the capacity market auction for 2029. As part of the project financing, the PGE Group will apply for funds from the KPO.

PGE develops energy storage program

PGE is already a leader in energy storage, with a nearly 90% share in pumped-storage power plants. The Group also has two battery energy storage facilities.

In 2020, PGE commissioned Poland's first modular energy storage facility in Rzepedź in the Podkarpackie region. The installation, with a capacity of approx. 2.1 MW and 4.2 MWh, was designed to support the reliability of the local distribution network.

In 2021, PGE Energia Odnawialna launched an energy storage facility with a capacity of 500 kW and a usable capacity of 750 kWh on Góra Żar in the Silesian Voivodeship. PGE Energetyka Kolejowa built an energy storage facility in Garbce near Wroclaw with a capacity of 5.5 MW and a usable capacity of 1.2 MWh, which is the largest energy storage facility operating for traction needs in Europe.

PGE is also working on a battery energy storage facility in Gryfino in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship with a capacity of 400 MW and no less than 800 MWh, which is planned to be commissioned in 2029.
