The Korean company LG Chem is to develop Europe's biggest production facility to supply lithium batteries for electric cars in Biskupice Podgórne near Wrocław. On Wednesday, October 5, the symbolic first spade was stuck into the ground thus commencing the development, to be completed in the second half of 2017. The ceremonial commencement of the production plant development was organised by the Koreans on a grand scale. The organisers invited representatives of the Polish government, with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Development and Minister of Finance Mateusz Morawiecki at the head, as well as Lower Silesian self-government officials and Vice Presidents of global automotive giants such as Jaguar Land Rover, Renault, VW, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Daimler Automotiv and GM. The meeting was attended by the most important presidents of LG and LG Chem, as well as the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Poland. According to the agreement, LG Chem is to invest some 1.3 billion PLN by the end of 2018. It will be Europe's first facility to undertake mass production of lithium batteries for the automotive sector. Europe's biggest production facility to supply batteries for electric cars The new LG Chem production facility, where production launch is planned for the second half of 2017, will feature 41,300 sq m of floor area. The facility's goal is to supply over 100 thousand batteries a year - exclusively for high performance electric cars capable of negotiating distances of up to 320 km on a single charge. The Koreans plan to employ about 1,000 workers for their facility located near Wrocław. More investments in Wrocław agglomeration The South Korean LG has been operating in the special economic zone in Biskupice Podgórne, Kobierzyce administrative district, for more than 10 years. The conglomerate's four companies are located in the area: LG Display, LG Electronics, LG Innotek and LG Chem, producing LCD panels, household appliances, and LED lighting. The units' total workforce is in excess of 3.5 thousand. The Koreans are some of the biggest employers in Wrocław agglomeration.
