On Tuesday 14 July, representatives of Wrocław Airport and Strabag signed a contract for the construction of an auxiliary terminal designed to serve passengers travelling outside the Schengen area.

“We are expanding at a rapid pace – we are currently carrying out the largest investment in our history, completing the expansion of the operational area and planning the extension of the main terminal; however, we must already respond to the unexpectedly rapid growth in the number of passengers we handle each year, which is why we are building a support terminal.”

In the new non-Schengen terminal

The additional building is to be constructed and connected to the main terminal on its eastern side (opposite the car hire area). Construction is expected to last until the end of April 2027. Afterwards, the terminal will need to be fitted out so that it can be operational for the summer season.

The auxiliary terminal will feature four gates for departing passengers, shops, catering outlets, border control gates and counters for arriving passengers, toilet facilities, etc.

The opening of this terminal will benefit all passengers using Wrocław Airport, as moving non-Schengen flight operations to a dedicated facility will free up a significant amount of space in the current terminal, increasing the capacity of the Schengen zone and improving the flow of passenger traffic during peak periods.

Dariusz Kowalczyk, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Wrocław Airport

The project – worth 15.4 million zlotys – will be carried out on a design-and-build basis by Strabag. “Our solid experience in constructing exhibition and sports halls will certainly result in high quality, precision and efficient coordination of the works, which will be crucial given such an ambitious completion deadline — said Przemysław Kuliś, Director of General Construction West at Strabag, whose portfolio includes, amongst others, a hall for the rolling mill in Siemianowice Śląskie, a new exhibition hall at Targi Kielce, and the KGHM Ślęza Arena sports hall in Wrocław.

More passengers, more infrastructure

The project represents the next stage in the comprehensive expansion of Wrocław Airport, which is simultaneously modernising its airport infrastructure and preparing for the extension of the main passenger terminal.

The auxiliary (non-Schengen) terminal will be used until the planned extension of the main terminal is completed, in order to maintain efficient passenger service. According to forecasts, the number of passengers at Wrocław Airport is set to exceed 6 million for the first time this year.
