LG Energy Solution, which is separated from LG Chem, is a leading global manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, mobility, information technology and energy storage systems.

The Korean giant has announced strategies

The conglomerate has an LG Energy Solution Wroclaw plant in Poland, which is the largest producer of batteries for electric cars in Europe. The conglomerate's announced vision of development and strategy - Empower Every Possibility and strengthening its leadership position in next-generation battery technology - is of great importance for Wroclaw and the metropolitan area.

We have set global standards in the battery industry and will continue to maintain our leadership status in this field.

David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution

Biskupice Podgorne near Wroclaw is home to a 100-hectare, state-of-the-art technology park that employs several thousand people. The factory near Wroclaw produces batteries that power cars of the world's leading brands.

Empower Every Possibility - LG Energy Solution's vision of development

The company aims to double revenue by 2028, announcing medium- and long-term strategies.

First, the company will seek to build a balanced business portfolio by actively expanding its non-electric vehicle business. The South Korean brand LG Energy Solution plans to reduce its reliance on the EV battery business and further increase the share of energy storage systems (ESS).

Second, LG Energy Solution will diversify its products and customers in the electric vehicle (EV) area. In addition to premium batteries based on high-nickel chemistry, the company will improve its competitiveness in affordable markets through LFP, LMFP and high-voltage medium nickel battery products. In addition, the company plans to expand its portfolio of cylindrical battery customers to include traditional automakers.

Third, the company aims to create a solid revenue structure by expanding its software and services business. In addition to market-leading battery management systems (BMS), the company will offer various services, including battery leasing, rental and recycling, to create a comprehensive BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) ecosystem.

Finally, LG Energy Solution wants to be a leader in next-generation battery technology to bring more innovation to the sector. In terms of solid-state batteries, the company plans to dominate the market by producing anode-free batteries that exclude lithium anode, and products with graphite-based anode. The company also plans to accelerate mass production of semi-solid-state “bipolar” batteries and low-cost, high-power batteries that use sulfur and sodium.

LG Energy Solution plans to manufacture energy storage in Poland

The new vision also means changes at the plant near Wroclaw , which is considering the production of energy storage units.

We will be able to use the current lines and machinery we have in the production of storage units. We need to rebuild them a bit with different storage capacities in mind. We have a complete production process at the plant, all stages from electrode to module. This gives us flexibility when it comes to creating different storage variants.

Jangha Lee, president of LG Energy Solution Wroclaw Ltd

Initially, the energy storages will target Polish power grids, but the company is also looking for customers in Europe. Home energy storage units will be the next step. The factory plans to start production, gain experience in this field, and then develop a strategy for these products.

- We have already selected the layout of the lines that will produce the energy storage units. Production could start in the second half of 2025. At first, the storages will be for power grids in Poland, but we are also trying to find customers in Europe,” admits Jangha Lee.

As a result, the company intends to maintain employment at least at the current level. Some of the employees currently handling automotive production lines will move into energy storage production.

Europe's largest energy storage facility and LG Energy Solution Wroclaw

The first step of LG Energy Solution Wroclaw towards the new strategy is also winning the tender for Europe's largest energy storage facility, which will be built in Zarnowiec. Indeed, the PGE Group has selected a general contractor for the investment to design and build, on a turnkey basis, the Zarnowiec battery energy storage facility. The Biskupice Podgorne based company is to carry out the project with a capacity of up to 263 MW and a minimum capacity of 900 MWh.

The Zarnowiec battery energy storage facility will be located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, near PGE's future offshore wind farms and Poland's largest pumped storage power plant in Zarnowiec, owned by PGE Energia Odnawialna, which will also be responsible for supervising the implementation of the storage facility. The project has received Poland's first electricity storage promise and has a connection agreement with the national power system.

LG's Wroclaw plant will produce batteries for Ford electric vans in Europe

LG Energy Solution in late 2024 also announced the signing of supply contracts with Ford Motor Company to power Ford's electric van delivery models in Europe.

Under the contracts, LG Energy Solution is expected to supply a total of 109 GWh of batteries for Ford's electric delivery vans, starting in 2026, with the duration of the contracts ranging from four to six years.

The two companies have also agreed that batteries for the current Ford Mustang Mach-E model will be produced in 2025 at LG Energy Solution's Michigan plant, instead of in Poland.

- These agreements are a testament to our experience and expertise in powering commercial vehicles with innovative battery technologies designed to operate under extreme operating conditions, said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. - Leveraging our local manufacturing capacity (...) we will provide our customers (...) with advanced battery technologies that effectively address a variety of needs.

Recall that in January 2024, we reported that LG Energy Solution Wroclaw and a Polish company - Impact Clean Power Technology, a leading supplier of high-powered battery systems for public transportation, announced the signing of an agreement to supply NCM lithium-ion batteries. The batteries will be produced by LG's Wroclaw plant.

What Korean conglomerate LG Energy Solution is doing?

Largest Korean investment in Poland in 2025 in electric car industry

Wroclaw has Europe's largest electric vehicle battery plant, LG Energy Solution, but this is not the end of Korean investments in the auto industry.

In 2025, Korean conglomerate giant Posco International is to launch production of parts for automotive electric motors at its new factory in Brzeg (Opolskie Voivodeship), within the Walbrzych Special Economic Zone “Invest-Park.”

  • Hyundai will be the main customer, but not only. The plant is expected to supply parts for more than 1.2 million cars a year.

The cost of building the Posco International plant is about PLN 180 million. In the first stage, 60,000 people will find work there. The workforce is expected to triple by 2030.

Another massive Korean investment in Poland in 2025 in the electric vehicle industry belongs to SK Nexilis, which is building a production plant in Stalowa Wola (Podkarpackie voivodeship).

  • Korea's SK Nexilis is the world's largest producer of copper foil, which is one of the components necessary for the production of lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars.

The Koreans are expected to invest about 3 billion zlotys in Stalowa Wola and create half a thousand new jobs.
