Njord Energy: electricity from kites in 48 hours

Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES) is a pioneering solution developed by engineers from Wroclaw

This innovative system, which generates electricity using autonomous kites, utilizes strong and stable winds at an altitude of 200-500 meters.

  • It is characterized by excellent energy efficiency of up to 70%, which is almost 50% higher than that typical for small, home wind turbines.
  • On an annual basis, the AWES Njord 50 kW system generates approximately 360,600 kWh, which is enough to power 100 to 120 standard homes.
  • The electricity-generating kites operate at a distance of 10 m to 1,000 m from the launch platform, and the entire system can be up and running in just 48 hours and, importantly, does not require large investments.

Njord Energy will test the system in Oman

The Njord Energy model involves the supply of mobile wind systems as plug-and-play solutions for regions with difficult access to energy, where energy demand is high and the construction of conventional turbines is unprofitable or even impossible.

Sebastian Szymański from Njord Energy emphasizes that Musandam, located in northern Oman, is just such a place. The region has a high demand for green energy, which is necessary for the construction of an independent energy infrastructure, while the terrain limits the construction of traditional wind turbines.

However, the wind conditions there are excellent, with winds reaching speeds of over 50 km/h on more than 200 days a year. These conditions are precisely why Oman was chosen as the first place in the world where Wrocław-based companies will test their pioneering system.

The signing of the agreement with Musandam Global Investment is a breakthrough in many ways, and all parties will benefit from it. For us, it is primarily an opportunity to test our demonstration system, export Polish technology that will contribute to the creation of a completely new market, and open the door to cooperation with new partners

Sebastian Szymański from Njord Energy

“And there are already many of them,” adds Sebastian Szymański. "We are currently in talks about pilot projects in Rwanda, Kenya, and India, among others. Our technology has also attracted the interest of representatives of the governments of the US, Colombia, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Oman, on the other hand, will gain technology that will enable it to diversify its economy and move away from fossil fuels, in line with its national strategy, Oman Vision 2040, emphasizes Szymański.

Under the agreement with Musandam Global Investment, Njord Energy will deliver a complete pilot system ready for demonstration of the company's technological capabilities. The Omani side will provide wind data and legal regulations to adapt the solution to local conditions. A joint working group will also be set up to locate the system, prepare business documentation and secure financing.

Njord Energy from Wroclaw. What do they do?

Njord Energy is a Polish startup founded in November 2023 in Wroclaw, which is developing an innovative solution in the field of renewable energy sources based on kite technology (Airborne Wind Energy). In 2024, Njord Energy completed work on its prototype called Drakkar, whose efficiency and effectiveness have been confirmed by tests. The company has now begun its expansion into international markets.
