The Mayor of Wrocław leads an economic mission to the Republic of Korea [12–19 September]

At the invitation of the authorities of Seongnam and Cheongju, the Mayor of Wrocław will lead a municipal delegation to the Republic of Korea. The purpose of the visit is to discuss the expansion of economic cooperation (including the battery sector supply chain), sign the ARAW–SNIP agreement and strengthen cultural ties. The Korean side will cover the costs of accommodation, meals, local transport and translation.
Why now? Real benefits and potential for more
The Wroclaw agglomeration is one of the most important centres of Korean investment in Europe. LG Energy Solution Wrocław operates Europe's largest electric vehicle battery factory near Wrocław — its current production capacity is approximately 86 GWh, with a target of 90 GWh in 2025 (approximately 1 million batteries per year).
- According to industry information, the plant employs over 7,000 people, and the company is developing new lines (including ESS energy storage systems).
- The presence of such large investors translates into jobs and tax revenues in the region — the municipality of Kobierzyce is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Poland (PLN 10,988.64 per capita).
The scale and density of Korean business in our region creates further potential: about half of the 550 companies with Korean capital operating in Poland are based in Lower Silesia. In turn, PAIH reports that in the last 22 years it has supported over 70 investment projects from Korea with a total value of ~EUR 7.7 billion and ~30,000 declared jobs.
Programme and objectives of the visit
- SEONGNAM / Pangyo Techno Valley – meetings at the town hall, talks with the chairman of the city council and the chamber of commerce and industry, signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on economic cooperation between ARAW and the Seongnam Industry Promotion Agency (SNIP), visits to key innovation centres. Pangyo (‘Korean Silicon Valley’) brings together approximately 1,622 companies and ~79,000 employees (complexes 1 and 2).
- CHEONGJU – visits to companies related to the battery industry and participation in the Cheongju Biennale 2025. This year's edition, ‘Re_Crafting Tomorrow’, runs from 4 September to 2 November and, for the first time in history, presents the works of Polish artists.
- CHEONGJU is the capital of North Chungcheong Province, a dynamic industrial centre (approx. 854,000 inhabitants, approx. 60,000 companies in sectors including pharmaceuticals, smart IT, biotechnology, transport, machinery and new energy technologies).
Composition of the delegation
The delegation is led by the Mayor of Wrocław. Representatives of the City Council, City Hall, ARAW and Wrocław Airport are participating. The programme includes, among other things, the signing of the ARAW-SNIP MOU in Seongnam, visits to Pangyo Techno Valley, and meetings with the authorities of Seongnam and Cheongju.
New partner city: Seongnam, South Korea
Let us recall that at the session on 11 September this year, councillors adopted a resolution on cooperation between Wrocław and Seongnam – a modern, dynamically developing city in the Seoul metropolitan area with a population of nearly one million.
The cooperation will primarily cover the areas of economy, education, science, culture and art, sport and tourism, social affairs and city management. The signing of the partnership agreement will allow for the development of relations, the implementation of joint projects and the strengthening of Wrocław's international position.
